Shabbat & Weekday Services

Shabbat services

East Midwood Jewish Center offers a variety of religious services on Shabbat.

Friday Night Services

On Friday evenings, we hold Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv services in the Rabbi Aaron Pomerantz Beit Hamidrash located on the first floor on the Synagogue. This is a traditional Friday night service, led by Cantor Sam Levine or by lay leaders.

On the third Friday of each month, we celebrate Shabbat-in-the-Round. This service takes place in the Grand Ballroom, on the second floor of the Synagogue. Led by Rabbi Alvin Kass and Cantor Levine, this service incorporates guitar and other instruments and is a wonderful, warm way of welcoming Shabbat. This family-friendly service is followed by a delicious Shabbat dinner (reservations required) with singing, bentching (reciting Grace after meals), and good company.

On the first Friday of each month, in addition to the traditional service, we host Shabbat-a-BimBom, a rousing Shabbat service geared towards tots and their siblings. Hosted by Education Director Audrey Korelstein and Cantor Levine, we welcome Shabbat with song and movement, in a joyful, kid-friendly way. Shabbat-a-BimBom is followed by a boisterous dinner that features a tastes-like-home meal cooked in our synagogue kitchen, with lots of kid-friendly food (reservations required) and the company of other parents, grandparents, family members and friends. Saturday Services

For early-birds, there is a traditional, lay-led, egalitarian Shabbat morning service that takes place in the Beit Hamidrash on the first floor on the Synagogue.

The main service begins at 9:00AM in the sanctuary on the third floor. This participatory traditional egalitarian service is led by Rabbi Alvin Kass and Cantor Sam Levine. We do a full Torah reading, and a full repetition of the Amidah. Congregants participate by reading Torah and haftarah, leading parts of the service, and offering words of Torah. We also take pride in being a singing community.

Shabbat afternoon services take place in the Beit Hamidrash. The Mincha service is followed by Ma’ariv , the evening service, and ends with the beautiful Havdalah service, which bids farewell to Shabbat and eases us into the rest of the week. Times vary, so check the website or call the synagogue office at 718-338-3800.

Weekday Services

East Midwood is proud to be one of the few Conservative egalitarian synagogues in Brooklyn that offers daily minyan, morning and evening. These are welcoming, informal, lay-led services that support our regular minyanaires and those saying kaddish. All are welcome.
